Historical Overview Of The Houston Astros
Originally called the Houston Colt .45s, the team adopted the moniker Astros in 1965. During their first several years, the Astros showed little promise of becoming a contender in the Major Leagues. This lasted until 1972, when they posted their best season to that point. However, it wasn't until 1979 when the Astros built enough momentum to compete for their division title. Though they ultimately lost to the Cincinnati Reds, it was enough to attract new free agent Nolan Ryan.
Focused on precision pitching, the Astros went on to win their division in 1980. Unfortunately, the future for the Astros was not bright. In 1981, they lost their division in a devastating upset to the Dodgers. The next few years found the Astros struggling to remain a contender in their division. 1986 delivered good fortune (and glory) for the team as they reclaimed their division. But, it was not to last. Following an uninspiring record during 1987, the management began selling off players (among them, star Nolan Ryan).
