Kansas City Royals Baseball
The Kansas City Royals played their first game in the city on April 8, 1969. After a grueling 12-inning game, they finally managed to successfully conquer the Minnesota Twins. The team was largely built under the trading machinations of the General Manager at the time. They went on to quickly gain recognition as a formidable Major League team, consistently posting impressive records each year. In 1980, led by George Brett, the Royals beat the Yankees, their long-time adversaries. Unfortunately, allegations of pine tar on bats and usage of illegal substances during the early 1980's cast a cloud on an otherwise promising team.
Beginning in 1986, the Kansas City Royals seemed to lose much of their momentum. They made puzzling trading moves and their performance on the field was uneven. Tragedy struck in 1987 when Dick Howser, a player on the Royals, died of brain cancer. During the several years that followed, the Royals struggled to regain their composure. They began to build their roster of promising young players such as Bo Jackson. While this strategy helped, the team failed to mount a campaign for the playoffs.
From the late 1990's until 2006, the Royals seemed to spiral out of control. They posted embarrassing records and were embattled by frequent changes in management and players. Over the past couple of years, they've tried to instill a renewed sense of youth and excitement into the team with new uniforms and a new manager. Their fans wait anxiously to see if the changes will have the anticipated effect.
